Mohamed Ishak Bin Mohamed Ibrahim, Batu Pahat
There is a story about Bill Gates was dining in the restaurant with his son together with his some other staffs. When the time paying the bills, his son gave a $500 tips to the waiter while Bill Gates was giving only $5. The waiter was shocked with the huge difference between the two father and son. However, he was brave enough to confront with Bill Gates to seek for the reason for only giving $5. Bill Gates replied, "He is the son of the richest man in the world while I am just the son of a woodcutter." Well, I hope you understand from this story which is going to be relevant with my following post.
If you ask me where is the best cendol that I had in my life, definitely I will not say Malacca or Penang where everyone thought it to be and of course even the big Klang Valley does not contain any best cendol. The best will be at Batu Pahat, Johor. Their cendol shop name is the founder itself, Mohamed Ishak Bin Mohamed Ibrahim.
You must be asking why am I claiming that they are the best and better than the well known places like Malacca and Penang, right? Everybody likes Malacca cendol is because of their unique taste of gula Melaka or known as brown sugar. While for Penang cendol is either they have a delicious texture of coconut milk gravy or their shave ice is very smooth which you are not eating ice but drinking it instead. Can you see what is missing here? The cendol!!! Yes, the green color thingy! No one will compliment the cendol itself because everyone has already get used to a normal tasteless cendol. In everyone's mind, when drinking a cendol, as long as the green thingy is inside, it is enough to consider it as a cendol and not really care how to differentiate it as good or bad cendol since they are tasteless. Maybe you will differentiate them where some will froze the cendol and some will not. This is how human easily forgetting the root or the origin.
In another words, the reason why Batu Pahat is the best is because their cendol itself taste uniquely different than anyone out there. I can REASSURE you that it is definitely DIFFERENT because this is their own recipe in making the cendol behind closed door for over 60 years!!! Can you believe it my grandma started to eat this when the time it was 5 cents per bowl? My mum also growing up with it from RM0.05 until now become RM1.00. Incredibly, this cendol has served our 3 generations.

Overall: 5/5 - Their cendol is very tangy and tiny which you wish to stay in your mouth to chew longer. However, they may not have the original brown sugar from Melaka but their brown sugar itself is not bad enough. They have smooth shaved ice and delicious milky coconut milk too! A combination of whole great recipe in one small bowl which is only RM1.00. Where can you find a cheap and tasty cendol at that price nowadays?
The really maintain their Ice Shaving Machine very well. The blade is so sharp to make a smooth ice which will melts within seconds. |
This is their business board which is quite small. You will not able to see it if you drive slightly fast. So when you on the road, maybe you would like to find a parking and get down to look for it. |
After all these years, they never planned to franchise, sell/share their recipe or to open more outlets. This is quite a pity but I just wish their great recipe will be pass on from generation to generation because I wish my children and grand children to enjoy this as well.
