Restaurant Terapung, Pulau Aman

In this post, I would like to take you to have a lunch in a quite troublesome way and at the same time could be fun too which is at Restaurant Terapung located at Pulau Aman! I was staying at Georgetown and travelling to Pulau Aman is never been easier and direct after having the Penang second link bridge which is also known as Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge. You just need to travel about 30-40 minutes heading towards Batu Maung and you will arrive at this jetty. You need to pay RM2.00 per entry for the parking.
What you see opposite this jetty is Pulau Aman. So they are really close. It is just about 10 minutes boat ride to reach.
The water at this jetty is the most dangerous I have ever seen. It is not because of the depth or the current but this...
Can you recognized the white color thingy? There are lots of them.
Yes, the jellyfish. They are quite big too! Just one sting enough to make me paralysed. I can't imagine what will happened to me if so many jelly fish like this giving me one sting each...hmm...I would probably die. Too creepy and scary.
Please click to enlarge this photo to see in more detail about things you can do on this island. The boat schedule from Batu Maung to Pulau Aman is 8.00am, 12.00pm, 3.00pm, 6.00pm. Not really accurate because I took the first boat at 9.00am. So basically they are just looking at the number of passenger is waiting for the boat. The price is at RM6.00 per pax for a return ticket.
This is the boat that is going to take you to Pulau Aman. Their life jacket is for display only. It is not compulsory to wear so you might question about the safety issue here. However, it is really very near so I guess they find it troublesome to wear and take off in such a short time.
Here we are at Pulau Aman. For your information, to go back to Batu Maung, the schedule is 10.00am, 1.00pm, 4.00pm, 7.00pm. Not accurate as well because I went back at 12.00pm. So I do believe it is every one hour once for the ride.
This island is really small and the main activity is fishing and the other thing is just camping. Swimming is not really encouraging because the water seems to be very dirty.
The main transport here is boat, second is motorcycle and third is bicycle. They are not cars or bigger vehicle here because there are no tar road made for it and it is unnecessary because of this is land is too small. As you can see on the direction board, basically the hot spots are within walking distance.
This island is a fisherman island. Do not look down on this island because they do have clinic and school too.
This is the Restaurant Terapung that I would like to introduce to you. This is also the only restaurant on this island. I would say 99% of the tourist travelling to this island is just because of this restaurant. The choices in their menu is very limited. So you might have this question, what is so special about it?
The awesome part which also the highlight of this restaurant is you able to eat very fresh seafood. There is a place where the fish wholesaler will collect all the fishermen's catching located just next to this restaurant. The fishermen will sell their fish directly to the wholesaler and we will buy the fresh seafood from the wholesaler only.
The main highlight of their seafood is this Mantis Prawn which is so big and 100% fresh. The minimum they will sell to you is 1kg. You can't tell them that you just one or two. After all, they are fish wholesaler. They do categorized these Mantis Prawn in 3 different grade based on their size. Please do select the Grade A which is the largest and it is only cost RM130/kg. It is cheaper than any other seafood restaurants in Penang.
This is the backside of it and please do be careful when handling him because he has a lot of sharp thorns all over its body.
The other highlights are crabs, groupers and many other fishes. Oysters like this would be rare.
Nasi Goreng Special @RM40.00++
Outlook: 4/5
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 4/5
Price: 4/5
Overall: 4/5 - This is a big plate to feed 4 pax but please look at the big and giant prawns. Those are fresh prawns too. Very delicious and they are not stingy about it. That's why they are calling this Nasi Goreng Special.

Steamed Mantis Prawn @RM8.00
Outlook: 4/5
Creativity: 3/5
Taste: 5/5
Price: 3/5
Overall: 3/5 - The cooking service is RM8.00/ plate which is pretty reasonable but the only issue is they will only do steamed cooking style. You cannot ask for any other style and this is the same goes to other seafood such as crab. However, I do suggest that steamed is the best way to bring out the sweet, tender and fresh mantis prawn. You may find that peeling the this shell is really troublesome but do not worry because they will provide you a very sharp scissors and all you got to do is to cut of all its legs together with the thorns and its tail. After that you will able to pull out the whole meat out of the shell easily. It is really juicy and sweet. I can assure you that one is not going to be enough.

Overall, this is an awesome lunch experience I ever had. I will come back again for crab and fishes. However, their service is a little rude and lack of smile by the lady boss of the restaurant. Same goes to the fish wholesaler which is serving me with the "take it or leave it" attitude. Do not come to early even there is an early boat to this place. They will only start cooking by 11.00am even though the restaurant is opened by 9.00am. If you are coming here for dinner and not overnight on this island, please make sure you do not miss the last boat at 7.00pm.
