Unkaizan Japanese Restaurant, Langkawi

There are a lot of local food award to reward the best restaurant in every cuisine category such as Time Out Food Award, Malaysia Tatler Award and etc. Surprisingly Unkaizan, located in Langkawi which is the least expected location for a Japanese cuisine has been rated as the best Japanese restaurant in whole Malaysia by Malaysia Tatler. Without further ado, I was seriously purposely traveled to Langkawi just to experience the so called best Japanese cuisine.

Price: 2/5
Overall: 2/5 - The sashimi platter consists of 3 pieces of tuna, 2 pieces of salmon and 2 pieces of yellowtail. Never doubt the freshness and the sweetness of their sashimi. They are so fresh as if they just caught the fish not long ago.Of course, it comes with a hefty price.

This is their signature dish which is their grill sea salted salmon fish. You can choose either you want the fish head or a small part of the body as you can see from the picture above. It is charcoal grilled so the charcoal fragrance has infused in the body and immersed out into your mouth when the moment you sink your teeth into the fresh salmon meat. The saltiness is strong but it brings you slight sweetness in it too. I am not a big fan of saltiness but do not strike this menu out yet. Different people different opinion. You maybe will like it! After all, you have to remember that it is a signature dish for a reason.
Ten Zaru Soba @RM46.00++
Outlook: 3/5
Creativity: 3/5
Taste: 3/5
Price: 2/5
Overall: 2/5 - They only sell one type off soba which is the zaru soba. The soba is 100% freshly homemade noodle. I somehow do felt like home when I tasting it. No kidding. The best is still the Tempura which is fried into golden crisp which is not too oily when chew. One is never enough, you might want to order more Tempura from them. However, the price is really too expensive.

Ended my dinner with a perfect dessert which is their homemade matcha and azuki ice cream. Love them both and it isalways delightful to eat an ice-cream that is homemade.
Unkaizan is a family restaurant opened by Chef Katsuji Takebayashi. He left his homegrown country and brought the best and original recipe from Japan to the people here in Malaysia. This place is his home and also restaurant too. You will definitely feel like you have entered a Japanese home restaurant when you have entered this restaurant. Every week, he will has some special offer or special dishes which is not in the menu to share with his beloved customers. Overall, I like their truthfulness and sincerity in serving their Japanese cuisine. I truly can felt it is all served from the bottom of their heart. However, the price is quite scary as if you are dining in a 5-stars restaurant.
