TGI Friday's @Sunway Pyramid
Everybody may knows about TGI Friday's food are good and their drinks are huge but how many of us know how this restaurant is born? Why it is named "Thank god! It's Friday!"? Have you ever ask yourself? If you do...let me explain to you now. Before I start, if you find my story below is kinda fake, well...you always can refer back to the source that I got. Read on and you will understand the reason for me to feel worry that you may think I might making up a story here.
This restaurant is founded by Alan Stillman in 1965 when at that time he was a perfume salesman and the important part here is he was still single despite his neighborhood was mostly occupied by various airline stewardess, fashion models, secretaries and other single people. At that time, there was no public places for him to meet these girls. So this New York guy sought to recreate a comfortable cocktail-party atmosphere in public despite having no experience in the restaurant business.
With $5,000 of his own money plus another $5,000 borrowed from his mother. Stillman purchased a bar he often visited, "The Good Tavern" and renamed it the name we all known of today "TGI Friday's". The new restaurant is opened in March 15, 1965 and served standard American food, bar food and alcoholic beverages. TGI Friday's was one of the first to use promotions such as "ladies night" and it is their tradition when every time someone had a birthday, the entire restaurant crew came around with a cake and sang Friday's traditional birthday song. Franchising of TGI Friday's began in 1971 and reached Malaysia in 1994 at Life Centre, Kuala Lumpur which is the same place with Munakata. That was also the same year that the first TGI Friday's location is closed and later on in near end of year 2009, the first location in Malaysia is closed as well. Today, TGI Friday's recorded over 1000 restaurants over 58 countries.
Interesting story ya? What you learned from this story? As for me, I learned that..does not really care whether you know how to do a thing or not because eventually you will able to learn it. The question is how desperate you want to do that thing. If you are desperate enough, nothing is really an obstacle to you. Alan Stillman "desperate" to know the stewardess, models and secretaries...the outcome maybe turned out to be different but it was still a whole new experience to learn along that process.
Ok, let me get back to my usual main topic...the food. =)
Friday's Ultimate Mudslide - A chocolate-laced avalanche of Kahlua, vodka, Baileys Irish Cream and ice cream |
Creativity: 5/5
Taste: 5/5
Overall: 5/5 - Must order! Seriously it tastes so good that I will order it every time I am there. This is the unique thing about TGI Friday's than other casual dining restaurant. They serve large drinks which is also known as "Ultimate" at 18oz (532ml).
Garlic Marinated Grilled Lamb Chops |
Creativity: 4/5
Taste: 3/5
Overall: 3/5 - So-so...not that bad. Their beef is still the best because they are using their signature Jack Daniel's sauce.
Chocolate Oreo Crunch, Strawberry Parfait and Mocha Latte |
Creativity: 5/5
Taste: 3/5
Overall: 4/5 - Taste is very normal for such an expensive price tag. Their dessert menu is not very appealing for me.
Their direct competitors are Chilis' and Tony Roma. Comparing with these 3 casual dining restaurants, Chllis' has its edge over all of them. The crowd already give you the best answer.
Ambiance: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Food Serving Speed: Moderate
Will I Revisit?: Recommended but I may not revisit for this time being.
