Family Chinese Food, Austin Heights

Family Chinese Food restaurant is a Chinese cuisine restaurant. Please do not confuse this Chinese cuisine with our Malaysian Chinese cuisine. They are totally different. This restaurant serves cuisine from China. China itself is very huge as we know. China has 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 2 administrative regions. Every each provinces and regions has their unique cuisine. So for this restaurant, they only serve Szechuan province cuisine, Hunan province cuisine and Dongbei province cuisine. All the 3 cuisines are well-known for their spiciness.
The reception for China cuisine is still not very well accepted even Malaysian Chinese as well. You wouldn't be surprised the restaurant is empty despite during the prime hours. However, the prospects and opportunities are there if they able to hang on because our Sultan Johor has accepted investors from China to invest in Johor especially the famous Iskandar project. We will be expecting more people from China coming into Johor especially Johor Bahru.
Chongqing Grilled Fish in Spicy Gravy @RM40.00

Overall: 4/5 - This is Szechuan cuisine. If you are a big fan of AirAsia, you will know there is a flight route to Chongqing, China. Chongqing is one of the city in Szechuan province. They are one of the cuisine that's famous in their spiciness. Once the dish was presented right in front of me, it reminded me of my favourite Mamee instant noodle curry flavor. The smell is almost the same. It is real appetizing. The fish was well grilled on the skin while the meat was still able to preserve its original soft and tender texture. The spices and herbs blended in so well with the fish meat which has gave an extra hot and spicy kick on your taste bud. However, the fish was not the spiciest. The vegetable in it was the spiciest one. I was unable to eat more than two vegetables. It was way beyond my limit that I can endure. Nonetheless, this was a delicious dish you should not miss if you are a big fan of hot and spicy.

Dongbei Pork and Chive Dumplings @RM12.00
Outlook: 2/5
Creativity: 2/5
Taste: 2/5
Price: 2/5
Overall: 2/5 - This is one of the famous Dongbei cuisine. Dongbei province consists of well-known cities such as Beijing and Harbin. This dumplings is not spicy. The keys of making good dumpling
are the skin must be finely thin and the fillings must be delicious and fragrant. They failed on both of them. Seems like they are not very good with Dongbei cuisine.

A chef that can master 3 province cuisines is really rare. Mastering 3 province cuisines is same like mastering 3 cuisines such as Malay cuisine, Indian cuisine and Western cuisine. It is not impossible but very tough. So one thing for sure is this restaurant is good with Szechuan cuisine but not Dongbei cuisine. Next time, I might be back for their Hunan cuisine.
